Description:
The cover athlete Brett Favre retired in early 2008. He later decided to play the 2008 football season however, and ended up being traded to the New York Jets on 8/7/2008, 5 days before Madden NFL 09 was due to release.
As all initial copies had already been printed, the game released with Favre in his Packers uniform. Per articles from around the game launch, EA claimed to have no plans of reprinting the cover to update the jersey. They provided downloads on their official website for customers to print their own replacement artwork.
However, Blockbuster locations and a few other retail chains received official replacement artwork to provide their customers. The PS3 artwork is slightly smaller than standard PS3 artwork, while artwork for all other platforms seems to have been printed to proper scale.
